Being old enough to remember "points" and plugs being part of a tuneup, I used to be old school on filters. Now, I use the small one because it's easier to get in and out.
With new fuels, manufacturing techniquics and materials, and engine management electronics, there's a whole lot less for the filter to do than there was 25-30 years ago. Engines run cleaner, fuel injection means a lot less raw gas in the oil than with carburators, PCV systems keep more crap out of the engine, and a lot less time driven on dusty gravel roads.
This, plus new oil additives or synthetic oil means the oil usually comes out a lot cleaner than it used to.
Engines used to worn out (worn away) by 100 k miles. Look at the difference now.
They really don't make them like they used to.
