The shifting as far as I know isn't a pinion issue. The sooner you get your tranny looked at by a Saab mech the less damage will be caused and less rebuild costs. The tranny is one of the most pricey repair items but if you want to keep your car for many years it is worth it and will pay you back over time. Right before my tranny went it started too pop out of 2nd and the there was some linkage problem where I couldn't find the gears and the stick would move way out of position. I was able to very carefully get it into 2nd-4th and got to my mech. You probally have linkage and bad syncros and also what JD said. Since you have an '88 like me you can get the bigger pinion from Swed Dynam ($300.00). Talk to a Saab mech you trust. Good luck. You will be happy with your new tranny!
