If so, have an independent give it a once-over. Although the automatic is not as much fun as the manual, people over-do the auto-bashing on this board. The fact is that both the auto and manual trannys are Saab's Achilles Heel. My independent says that given proper care to both trannys, the automatic is a little more durable. I don't know if that's true, but, you can find some postings on this board with auto boxes over 200,000 miles and still going. People who are religious about oil changes generally neglect transmission care...fluid checking, replacing, filter changing...don't know why. An independent will evaluate this for you.
The auto box is a Borg Warmer type 37 3-speed transmission. Its a small transmission and was used on many Eurpoean cars starting in the 50s...even Studebakers used them. Gas mileage is lower than manuals as is performance. I was looking for a manual, but, most had the automatic and I could not pass up the one I now have.
But, you do have to watch out for that head gasket on the 2.1 litre. That did develop a reputation for failure.
Good luck.
