I just bought a 91cvt. it's an auto and does reduce the "performance" somewhat. I'll probably get bashed on this but why buy a Saab if drag race performance is a desire anyway ??
I find the auto to be perfectly fine in most situations and very convenient when in traffic. What I like about the car is the general quality of the materials and unique design.
My car consistently gets over 20mpg in general use and gets close to 25mpg on the highway. The gearing is a little shorter than the 5spd but I'm showing about 3,200 rpm at 75 which is hardly noticable on this motor. Another plus to the shorter gearing is that there is very decent acceleration once moving along.
My car has 136,500 miles and the tranny is still sharp and shifts nicely with no slip. Fortunately, I got the car from the original owner that is a SAABafile and followed factory service schedules to a tee. I need a new top but otherwise my car is virtually perfect and complete and unmodified.
This is a classic car that is pleasant to drive anytime but especially when the weather is fine and the top is down. Let the adolescents in the convertible M3s ($60k apx.) race on.
