Shifting getting a little tougher...

Don't know if it's cold weather related, but my car is having a little more difficult time shifting lately... not always, but enough that i notice it. More prevelant with lower gears, and just seems like i can "feel" it moving into gear (as if i can feel the tooth of one gear sliding into it's position between 2 teeth of the other gear... i don't know anything about trannies, so i may have the whole transmission process wrong in my description). Occaisionally it won't want to go into first, so instead of forcing the issue i bring back to neutral and then go into first w/o a problem.
I guess first thing to do would be to check transmission fluid, correct? Anything i should know in particular about this?
From the limited info i've given, does it sound like cold weather blues, tranny oil needed, synchro, or more serious tranny problems? How big are each of these for DIY?
Car is '86 5speed 900S with 115K.
