Your technique works if the shaft is not spinning due to a rusty shaft or a bad pilot bearing. If the shift into reverse or first is stiff, your technique is standard procedure to get into gear, been using it forever.
If the pilot or shaft are bad, the reverse crunch will be there unless you stop the tranny from spinning by shifting into another gear first and then quicklyshift into reverse. When the pilot and shaft get really bad, the problem escalates beyond reverse, and shifting is difficult even between gears while driving, because the synchromesh cannot deal with that much spinning between shifts.
