u need to stick the new gasket to the cover.. some kind of sealant could be used to do this but so could a few dabs of impact adhesive.. nothing should be used between the gasket and the upper nicely machined surface of the head except perhaps a thin smear of oil.. the idea being to stop the gasket sticking to the head if possible.. if its done properly the cover can be removed for later inspection without wrecking the new gasket.. with a modicum of luck the gasket will break cleanly from the head and remain firmly stuck to the cover.. the gasket can be reused several times if this happens..
others will no doubt give different advice.. he he.. but over a number of years doing it the way i have described has served me well..
