its also a neat means of fixing the gasket in place but if the two mateing surfaces are good (and clean) u dont need it if they aint u do.. just general gasket advice not waterpump specific..
i spose good advice would be if the parts are hard to get at and there is any doubt about the surfaces use some.. but use it sparingly.. i am not overkeen on silicon based products myself.. except for doing around the bath or bunging up really big holes.. he he.. the only thing silicon has going for it is it stands very high temperatures and stays rubbery..
sometimes if i think a part might have to come apart again i might use a skim of sealant to stick the gasket to one half of things and a very thin smear of oil on the other half so as the gasket dosnt stick.. and a thin skim of sealant on one half of the joint does fix the gasket nicely in place if nothing else.. fixing the gasket nicely in place does help when trying to put things back together.. he he
