a few years back i once had to finish putting back together an old jag XK engine.. i check the valve clearance and they were all vaguely right.. everything looked okay so i bunged the covers back on and fired up the engine.. the mount of clatter coming out of this engine was unbelievable.. so off come the covers and everything was checked again.. but nothing appeared wrong..
anyway the way things work on the old XK engines is this.. there is a very slow oil feed up into the valve cover area.. the oil return holes that let all this back into the sump are high up the tilted heads.. the cams are intended to run totally immersed in engine oil.. once this oil is up there it stays up there but it takes nearly an hour of engine running to fill up until the return holes are reached.. hence the noisy clatter.. of course knowing all this before i started would have helped but at the time i didnt.. he he.. and if u ever have to pull the cam covers off an old jag engine.. expect over pint of oil to come spilling out of each one.. these old jag engines were known to burn lots of oil.. having the cam covers half full of the stuff all the time was partly responsible for this cos down the valve guides a lot of it went..
just a story..
