Picked up an Edwardian Grey 1988 SPG w/125K last weekend for a very reasonable price and had it checked out today. Thought I might've scored two good deals in a day (I also purchased a Red 1990 that day, see pix below...) but I guess I managed to score a measely 50%.

Here's a brief list of the bad news from a reputable local mechanic:

1. Had a leaky tranny, probably from the rear end, otherwise tranny is great
2. Possible worn bushing/bearing causing the con-rod to make some noise when engine is cold. Darn, it sure sounded like it needed a valve job when I test drove this thing
3. Paintwork is generally good-excellent, with a very small dent/rust on left hood and cracked side indicators, some surface scratches
4. Car has seen lots of city parking, so front and rear bumper covers has seen better days (read: pretty screwed up)
5. Reverse gear lock mechanism not working
6. Driver seat typical of car this vintage - worn
7. Some oil leaks from oil pump
8. Some power steering leaks

Otherwise, this car would make a great daily driver. Headliner and dash are absolutely perfect, engine runs really strong (boosts quickly, holds boost), tranny appears mechanically sound, even has new front brakes. To illustrate, I will post pictures once I get it cleaned this weekend.

What would you do if you were in my shoes? The options seem to be: (1) have the mechanic fix it, but it'll cost more than what I paid for the car; (2) put in a new engine (don't yet have labor estimates); (3) attempt a rebuild of the engine (whoa! this'll be my first time); (4) sell it (least desireable option)

I'll admit up front that I'm torn here, which is why I'm polling for opinions in the first place. The thought of rebuilding the engine myself, throwing in some go-fast parts, and getting great experience out of the process is really cool, but I do need someone to pull out the engine, and then head down to Sears to get the right tools for the job.

Where should my thought process be pointing?
