Possible clutch problem

I have a curious problem. The other day on the interstate (7 hours into the drive) i was travelling up hill in 4th gear at around 3200 rpms (70 mph) and suddenly my clutch felt as though it were slipping, the tach dropped a bunch of times (fluctuating) and the car felt like it was lurching...i down shifted and the problem stopped, shifted back up and it was fine...I've noticed the problem several other times when accelerating in second gear from about 1000 rpms, if i floor it. the problem seems to come and go, and only comes under hard acceleration, or sustained high speed cruising under load (ie, uphills, or downshifting to pass a slow bastard). It's a stock N/A '87 900 with 172K, but i have less than 5k on the clutch and less than 2K on the tranny. Any thoughts? Maybe the clutch cylinder? perhaps the clutch isn't adjusted right? i don't think the clutch should have weak springs on the plate after 5K miles.
