I was all set to do the crankshaft pulley repair on my SAAB this past weekend. I had looked at the Townsend site, the TwinSaabs site, the Bentley manual, and numerous posts on this board. I felt as prepared as I could be. The process seemed straight forward, with the only possibly problem being the removal of the pulley nut.
Anyway, back to reality. My wife (yes, you can see where this is going) innocently asked how much it would cost me for all the parts and tools that I would need. I gave some figure like $300 to $400 considering both my Torque wrench and my floor jack were broken and I needed new ones. To make a long story short, she said that it sounded like it wouldn't be THAT much more expensive to have a SAAB mechanic do it. She had a point. The SAAB mechanic I go to gave an estimate of about $500 including the new belts.
Having been talked into letting a mechanic do the job, she then proceeded to talk me INTO putting up a garage door opener instead. Man, she is SMOOTH. Anyway, I took my SAAB over to the mechanic. I don't really like going to a mechanic without being familiar with the possible problems the car has. It's like when you take a car in because it won't start and they tell you that you need a new Thing-A-Ma-Jingy for $4715. But this time, I new all about the process. I told the mechanic that it's the pulley, and to do the two seals and replace the belts. They tried the old, "well, it could be something more serious", and I totally shot them down. I mentioned how I had diagnosed the problem. Once they saw that I was familiar with the process, they changed their tune. It was nice having the upper hand for once.
Anyway, they did the work and I have no complaints, other than I would have like to have done it. They did complain, however, that the nut was on REALLY tight. That made me feel a little better. I mentally picture me fighting with the nut for hours to no avail. Everything worked out. And I did actually get the garage door opener up!
Now, on to bigger and better things, like figuring out if my head gasket is going bad!!!
