Cool how you put the mechanic in his place. I love doing that!
No new tools means that future repairs are compromised. I would whine and complain and maybe she will buy you that floor jack for Easter. At least force her into cooking your favorite dinner.
I am lucky my wife knows that I work on cars to get rid of frustration. Either I attack a car with a spanner, or I attack people I live with, (just kidding). I have tons of tools though, so at this point my repairs usually save hundreds if not thousands. I calculated several years ago that all my tools and hoists have been paid for at least 6 times over. The figure is still rising. I own thousands of dollars worth of tools.
I feel for you bro'. Next time give a lower estimate, and learn to get things like 5 tonne floor jacks rebuilt rather than buying new ones.
