But 1980 conversions are not... Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: RHD would be a problem..., The Nord, Tue, 21 Jan 2003 17:36:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well, my experience was good and bad.
I had no problem with the swap itself. Everything went really smoothly. I swapped nearly the entire contents of Toshi's dead SPG into the 5-door. Wiring the engine was a piece of cake - it took only a couple hours at best. I installed APC and Hall-Effect which I didn't need to do, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. I would say in all that wiring took the better part of a day, but mostly that was trying to decipher the crappy wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual and match them up with components from a later car. For whatever reason, Haynes chose not to show wiring for 1980 900 Turbos, so I had to do a little guessing based on the diagrams for a '79 900T and an '80 900EMS. Needless to say, the '80 T was different.
All said and done the electrical works perfectly. No problems, I've driven the car several thousand miles at this point and it's never died or hiccup'ed. I documented it all, so I could probably do it again in half the time.
The bad is there seems to be some sort of mechanical problem. The engine pulls strong and gets good mileage, but has a vibration at idle that only begins after everything is warmed up. It's smooth as silk when cold, and you'd never know it was anything but 100% factory. The vibration gets worse when the wheel is turned, which makes little to no sense. The motor mounts are new and everything is tightened properly, so I'm at a loss. Whatever this vibration is affects the APC system, and after the car is warm I only get base boost. As a result of all this, I've not driven the car that much.
Still, I'm confident that the problem is mechanical and has something to do with the engine and not my wiring job. I'm positive that if I swapped in a different engine it would all be fine. That is in fact my ultimate plan, so I'm not too worried. I do intend on using something other than a 200,000 mile old engine, but just wanted to get it up and running as a proof of concept before dropping $4k on bodywork and a paintjob. When I've got the budget for that, I'll see about the new engine at the same time. :)
