If the tapping is coming from near the firewall, I would first suspect a rock hard chain pad in the valve cover. Simple replacement, just pull valve cover and slide pad from under tabs and slip in a new flexible one.
To pinpoint the noise I use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope by touching the tip along the valve cover and holding the handle against my ear. Piece of tubing works, too.
If it's definitely a cam follower/lifter and you car does not have the plastic oiler tubes, I would try a can of marvel mystery oil. Yeah, yeah, I know it's snake oil, but the darn stuff can free up sticky lifters. However, since you have been using Mobil 1, you shouldn't have any gunk in the lifters.
