I used to frequent an Indy SAAB shop to chat with the owner. I also bought my current used 82T from him. For a song, but that's another story. He had all manner of 900's and Volvos in various shape, either being worked on, rebuilt or parted out. One 2 door was in excellent shape, but had a blown tranny. The owner had taken it to a quickie lube place where the dumb mechanic drained the tranny fluid, but refilled the crank, leaving the tranny dry. The owner drove for a few days like that, not suspecting anything, until it went cachunk while on the freeway. I can't imagine a new tranny breaking because of some efforts to shift without oil. Makes no sense. What about something out of alignment, like the entire assembly isn't mounted properly? That shift rod connection can also be troublesome to adjust and leave you with the impression the tranny is kaput if not aligned properly. Perhaps it's the clutch that's giving you the problem. Good luck.
