Crank Sensor Check

I am looking for advice on testing a crank sensor from the three wires that enter/leave the sensor.
The engine is not in the vehicle.
My assumption is that of the three wires one will be a ground, one will be a power supply & one will the signal sent back to the EZK ignition computer.
Now my problem is determining which does what.
The three wires are distinguished by their colors.
1 Black, 1 Red, 1 Grey/red.
After I find out the above sequence, I will ground the sensor via the proper wire then feed a fused 12v power supply to the "Power Wire."
Finally hook up a voltage meter to the last wire and check the 2 different voltages as per the Townsend internet site.
Any help as to the three wires color/fuction.
TIA.
