I've had two similar situations. A couple of years ago, while driving down the NYS thruway at night, a large deer carcass suddenly appeared between the rear wheels of the 18-wheeler in front of me. There was no time (or room) to avoid it, so *whoomp!*- my SPG lifts up a bit (I doubt the wheels left the ground) and continues straight ahead. Instantly, there's lots of noise. The exhaust got much louder, and there was a very loud grinding noise accompanied by a shower of sparks shooting out the rear.
I pulled off to the side, and was able to remove the muffler and tailpipe by hand. The muffler had seperated from the center pipe and wedged itself forward and down into the road. No other problems except for some deer jerky on the undercarriage. I replaced the exhaust with a cat-back MSS system, which has performed (and lasted) extremely well.
Back in college (about a dozen years ago), I was driving my old '80 GLi up to Mad River Glen for some skiing. A few miles from the slopes, I drove over a small lump in the road and *****WWWWWAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH****** the car starts making an ungodly loud noise. I pulled over, popped the hood, and saw that the exhaust had broken off at the engine manifold.
The skiing was great, but the 3-hour drive back to Albany was quite a chore. I could see cars a quarter-mile ahead on I-87 with the drivers looking around for a low-flying airplane. I sounded like a cessna taxiing down the road at 70mph.
Glad to hear that you were back in action for a mere twenty bucks!
