Young Mr.Taylor-
I've driven only Saabs for eight years, since I was 16. ('87 900S 4dr 1 yr; '91 900S 4dr 2 yrs; '91 SPG 5 yrs.) My advice would be this. First, I would get the coupe. The four door is a bit more practical in the sense that you can get people in and out of the car quickly, but as a young driver I would not haul around a lot of people to start with. The coupe I don't think you'll outgrow as quick-see above list of vehicles. I only upgraded 'cause I wanted a sportier ride, all the cars ran great. Second, the hatchback on the coupe will serve you very well if you are planning to go away to university. I moved myself in and out for four years no problems, not to mention packing it full with three other guys to drive to regattas 1,000 miles away.
Get a TURBO or SPG Don't bother getting a base and upgrading it. My dad and I do most of our car service ourselves and I've rebuilt a 1972 land rover and I would not take a ton of time to install a turbo on a base 16v. (You can, but why?) My insurance actually went down when I sold my RED 900s and bought a black spg. Go figure-red, bad color.
Other than that I would say hold out for a low mileage car (100k)-they are out there. Find a reliable independent mech or a good saab dealer and have any car inspected. Trust me on that.
My personal year would be 1991. That was the last year that Saab was Saab and not GM. In '92 they made a few interior style changes, but since you want to keep the car a long time, the rule 'newer is better' probably applies.
So you want a 1991-93 Turbo Coupe or SPG not in Red, with only a 5 speed manual transmission. Do not get a non turbo and especially don't get a non-turbo automatic. My sister has a '92 non-turbo automatic and my grandmother can run faster than that car off the start. Its fine for my sister, but I don't think you want the same car as my sister. You want to drive the car and not be driven by an automatic. (if you don't know how, you can learn its real easy) ok-good luck. I've never, ever had a saab let me down, hope it works as well for you. And drive safely.
