At least that's my limited understanding. The compression on the NA engine is much higher (11:1 vs 8:1 ???) this compression comes from differently shaped piston head combinations - I don't know anything more specific than that.
It would seem crazy though for Saab to make two different engine blocks though. A company always wants to get in with economies of scale (make a lot of the same thing rather than a buch of dissimilar things) I will go so far to say that any 1987 Saab (900 or 9000, turbo or non, 8v or 16v) would have the same block (as long it is a 4cyl)
just a guess though - please correct me if I'm wrong.
