I don't think you can start the car from the test plug. I think the wire from the distributor is only a tach pickup.
I also do not know of a cannon plug. The plug through the side of the firewall to the fuse box #152a is a rectangular plug with many pins (29?). This is a bear to access, pull dash, etc. It is far easier to get right to the ignition switch in the console.
If you have already done that and have determined that you have a wiring harness problem between the ignition switch and fusebox. You have to pull the dash and peel back the carpet to get to the harness. Plan B is to run a new wire from the ignition switch up to the fuse box to bypass the harness entirely. After having rebuilt a melted harness on an 85, I would run a new wire.
