Your car holds approximately 8 quarts of automatic transmission fluid. Opening up the transmission pan drainscrew will drain 4 quarts of fluid. The other 4 quarts are in the torque converter. Initially red in color, its not unusual for it to turn brown over time. It should NOT have a burnt smell.
Open up the screw and let it drain into a pan large enough to hold 1 gallon. If you wish, you can then drop the pan to access the filter. The filter is metal and is held in by 2 bolts (11mm?). Merely clean the filter with fluid and reinstall - you shouldn't need a new one. You'll need a new gasket once you drop the pan, so, have it ready.
Top up with 4 quarts using a long-neck funnel in the transmission dipstick housing at the back of the engine (close to the radiator). You may wish to redrain the pan (again 4 quarts) in a few weeks or months, and yet again in another few weeks or months. I merely drain once per year at one of my oil changes and record it. Once you start the car, slowly mode the shift lever to reverse, pause 5 - 10 seconmds or so, then neutral, pause, drive, pause, etc. Then take it for a test drive and note any leaks around the pan, drainscrew, etc.
The transmission calls for Type F fluid which is used on older Ford automatics. I ordered 2 cases of Valvoline Type "FA" a few years ago from an oil distributor I found in the yellow pages. This will last me quite some time. You could use synthetic, but, I wouldn't know if that matters or which type. I use synthetic for all other fluids, but, I never used it for the transmission....I don't know why I never switched for the tranny!
