coolant leak - how dangerous?

I replaced the waterpump on my '88 S about a month ago. The day I did the work was a cold one and consequently I tend to smeel a little coolant leaking when the engine gets up to operating temperature. I don't see any leaking from the heater core and thus assume that either the waterpump gasket didn't seal completely (from the cold) or else one of the hose clamps is a little loose. Last week I notice a small amount in the hollow ahead of the waterpump. I assume that a small amount leaks out and then cooks off as I drive. Now for the question(s)
(1) it is cold in minnesota right now and I'd rather not tighten the hoses/reseal the waterpump until the weather is nicer. Will the small amount of leaking coolant damage engine components/surfaces as it condenses on the inside of the engine bay?
(2) How unhealthy is is to breathe in that maple suryup smell from the heater ducts?
please excuse my paranoia - if I really have to fix this now I will - but I'd rather not.
