I am not aware that the position of the steering wheel has any influence on the function of the ignition switch and shifter. Sounds like the key and or shifter have been 'forced' , damaging the mechanism that locks reverse. You may have to repair or disable the damaged mechanism to repair the key function. With seats and console/ shifter cover removed the shifter can be dismounted and the mechanisms accessed. The key cylinder turns a gear that meshes with a gear that operates the electrical switch. There is an 'arm' that works as a block to keep the shifter in reverse when the key is in the 'lock' position.
