...or so I have been told but have not personally driven neither seen one in person.

In case of the 900 I have heard that the standard engine block has been converted to diesel. Have no idea how it holds up but one thing is for sure: this is not the kind of nice and smooth TDI that the new cars have.

The situation with the Saab 9000 is a bit better: as it shares the same basic architecture with the Lancia Thema, Alfa Romeo 164 and Fiat Croma and there has been diesel engines available for them, it is not impossible to plant one into the 9000. I have heard (again, have not seen) that even a very modern TDI engine that is in use in the current line-up of Fiat Ducato vans would go into the 9000 without too much trouble.

But as we've seen things like Mustang V8's and 2.3l transverse Saab turbo engines planted into the old 900 you can't really judge anything impossible. It is just that some things are a bit more involved :)

One thing I'll have to say - even though I love my gasoline powered turbo - is that the new turbo diesels are truely sweet machines. They have the torque of a full blown turbo and the mpg's they get are simply amazing. I HATE the power curve of the diesel but have learned my lesson with the BMW 530's they use as a taxi around here: a diesel can be a good performer too!

For you US folks the fuel consumption or cost probably isn't that big an issue but I can assure you that a modern turbo diesel is really a pleasant powerplant for the driver, too. If the diesel's not turbo: forget it. The difference is like comparing a 2-stroke engine to a 4-stroker.

Today almost half of the new cars sold in europe are diesel powered. The diesel is about 30% cheaper than gas and a modern diesel engine uses roughly 30% less fuel than a gasoline engine.
