Gasket failure is common especially at juncture between cylinder 1 and timing chain. That allows oil into rad fluid, hence the hydrocarbon sniff. Get high pro gasket to replace. It is a DIY project (see how at http://www.twinsaabs.com), but not for the light of heart. When my mechanic dropped my engine into my car for me (wife was 9 months pregnant, overdue, and I couldn't screw around without it getting done quick), he only charged me an additional 100 bucks, so it aint hard or expensive. I also had him do timing belt and tensioner. Only took him less than half a day for everything. The head was fine, and of course my gasket was failing at the predicted position. He actually noticed it because as he did the chain, the gasket was protruding out. (we all do chain/tensioners to make engine quiet and driving long trips to Boston Saab rallies more enjoyable). My car now has great a engine, compression up to 170 per cylinder, and ORIGINAL head.
Moral, don't fix if it ain't broke.
