the usually small bore pipe coming off or say loose fit of a bigger one only lets xxxx amount of unwanted air in.. at idle this small amount of unwanted air is a "relatively" big amount compared to the correct air/fuel ratio.. this extra air weakens off the idle mixture enough to cause rough or slow running or even a complete stop.. however as the throttle opens and more wanted air and fuel goes in (lots of it) the relatively small leak of unwanted air will not make any noticable difference to the fuel/air mixture and wont affect the way the car runs over much..
this is just a general air leak comment.. there are exceptions to this rule.. mainly where vacuum pipes control other engine management systems..
