I recall being stuck in traffic in the Lincoln Tunnel on the hottest day of the year with an overheating Ford. Had to the heater on full blast, heater fan on high, and drop the trans into neutral & rev the engine to get the engine fan turning faster.
I don't see any sense to shutting down the heater core, as it is an auxillary heat exchanger. The more cooling surface area, the better. But this is from the engineers who put the alternator on resilient rubber mounts, but not the power steering pump or AC compressor. (I guess they were after-thoughts)
