Engine and Transmission Swap - Advice needed

On grounds of a rod knock and leaky tranny, I have decided to swap in a 1993 16V Turbo and rebuilt tranny into my '88 SPG with just 126K miles.
This will be my first attempt at car repair of such a magnitude, armed with just a Bentley manual, access to a good garage with good equipment, and hopefully some helpful souls at Saabnet.
I have sourced out an engine with very low mileage, and intend to swap in a 2.1L head/manifolds (if you know where to find one, please let me know!) massaged by the nice folks as Lesco. Bottom end will probably not be touched, except shaving a few pounds off the flywheel if funds permit.
For those with some experience with this delicate operation, please share some experiences. In particular, here are some immediate questions I have as part of the planning phase:
1. Engine stands - do these make things easier ? I understand that adapters are needed for the regular stands to make it work. Am I better off with a metal workbench and some 4x2 blocks stacked to balance the block/tranny?
2. Any pitfalls I should avoid when trying to fit a 93 engine into an 88? I recall that the ignition system may have been slightly different, and perhaps the fuel system?
Appreciate any help I can get. Thanks to all in advance.
