Comparing the 900 to a Geo is setting a very low bar.
The 900 is one of the safest cars on the road. Period. Check out the Insurance Institute numbers. They have actual fatalities/million miles. The 900 shows up well. They also have payouts. Saabs uniformly have low payouts for injuries, high payouts for repair. That's a trade I'll take anyday.
Yes, some newer cars have more safety equipment - like extra airbags and the like. I'm glad my newer cars have airbags, but airbags do you NO good if the car crumples like tinfoil.
I lost control of my '86 900 on ice on the highway, and slammed head-on into the concrete bridge abutment. 65 mph to zero in no time flat, emphasis on the flat. The hood came up to protect the windshield, just like it was suposed to.
My passenger and I opened the doors and stepped out. No airbags in '86, but we did have seatbelts. Not a scratch on us. None of the windows broke, the doors opened and closed, I could even open and close the sunroof. That tells you how strong the passenger compartment is. The engine compartment was a tangled mess, having taken the full force of the crash.
I replace it with a 9000 two weeks later. I like the extra space. Do I consider a classic 900 safe? You bet.
