Well, today I repaired what is hopefully my last coolant leak. Over the past few months, I replaced the Heater Control valve, upper radiator hoses, A/C shutoff sensor gasket (in the upper radiator hose), and the short bypass hose on the front of the engine block. Today I replaced the thermostat and gasket that goes with it. The thermostat still looked good, but the old gasket had a breach in it. I replaced both anyway. I didn't get the one hose clamp tight enough, so I'll have to check it again in a day or so to make sure it no longer drips.
I checked the spark plugs while I was under the hood. I have been having "starting" problems for a while, as if a cylinder was missing for the first 30 seconds or so upon starting. The car shakes a litte as if it is off balance, and the RPMS are low. This only happens when the car has been sitting for a day or more, otherwise it starts right up if used recently. All the plugs were bone-dry. I had been looking for signs of coolant from a blown head gasket.
What I did notice was sulfur deposits on two plugs, charring on the other 2, and what can only be described as a "rusty" sparg plug hole on cylinder #1. It seemed as if there was a lot of brownish deposits on both sets of thread on cylinder #1. I check the plugs after I had started the car for 15 seconds, just to make sure I was experiencing the condition. Shut the car off, check, and no wetness on any of the plugs.
So, I'm thinking the "starting" problem is not being caused by coolant in the chamber. Next steps will be new plugs, wires, distributor cap, and coil wire.
Anyone have any other suggestions as to what to look at for cold-start problems?
