I hope I am wrong, but your car seems to have similar symptoms to my car. Unfortunately my problems lead to a head gasket replacement.
My problems started with a blown upper rad hose, although I cannot be certain this was related, I believe that pressure build up in the system caused a somewhat early demise of the upper rad hose. I replaced the hose, but continued to have a small amt of coolant loss.
Next symptom, the car would only run on 3 cyl after sitting overnight in colder weather (just below freezing or 25 F and lower). The RPMs would be low, as only running on 3, but this would clear up in under a min and start to run properly on 4 cyl. After a minute, then the car would run fine. And it would run perfectly in warmer weather (anything a few degrees above freezing or in the mid 30 F range and up).
I did not experience coolant in the oil or the reverse condition of oil in the coolant. I did experience a telltale sign that the head gasket was letting a small amt of coolant into the combustion chamber. That is, the coolant overflow tank developed a positive vacuum and a stream of air bubbles could be seen trailing in from the overflow hose that exits towards the front of the car. It was also difficult to remove the cap as well, due to the vacuum in the system. You could also hear the trickle of the air bubbles.
The amt of coolant loss was not enough to cause a large plume of white smoke upon starting the car, buy most will experience this if the leak is permitted to go long enough and get worse. But I thought I could barely detect the smell of burnt coolant in and around the car, esp. just after start up over a period of time prior to seeing the actual air bubble appear in the overflow tank.
I know you said you pulled the plugs and they were dry, but did you try a leak down test?
I hope that you have fixed your cooling problems, but I have read other posts that say that when one cooling sys problem occurs after another, it can signal head gasket problems.
After head gasket replacement the cooling system on my 90 900S has not given me any problem. And the car starts perfectly on all 4 cyl on all occasions. That is until yesterday (-15 F) when the car would not start. But that was due to a flooding condition caused by extreme cold weather, where the plugs had to be taken out and dried in order to correct the problem. Now running great.
