I just got a '93 box for my SPG, and was surprised to find that it had no drain plug! I see two options:
1) Don't do anything. When it is time to change the fluid, pop off the rear diff cover and the fluid will gush out all over you. The gasket is only $4, plus you can check the pinion/ring gear backlash and scoop out the crud from the bottom of the box. Hey, it only happens once every 30k or 50k miles!
2) Drill in-car for an NPT plug -- a 3/8NPT or 1/2NPT plug right where the usual drain bolt goes. I would use an aluminum plug w/ teflon sealant on the threads (the goop, not the tape). Since an NPT is wedge-shaped, torque of the plug must be monitoroe
3) Drill out-of-car for an OEM-style drain bolt. When you use the OEM straight-threaded bolt, it is the washer that makes the seal, not the threads. The threaded hole *must be* perpendicular to the sealing area around the hole, or it will leak. Doing this by hand will take some luck. I plan on mounting my gearbox case to a mill, and decking the boss area and drilling/tapping to make sure of the perpendicularity. Easy to say when you have access to such a machine...sorry!
