.............Starting eats up amps, driving at night for short hops with lights on and heater on in winter does not allow battery time and amperage to recover. Turn off lights and heater and stereo at end of short hops and rev engine for 30 seconds without feet on the brake pedal, (rev to no higher than 2000 RPM). That should help old buddy.
As far as testing, let Sears do it all for you! They will check battery and amperage output of the alternator for free. Then just ask them for the exact number values and results and walk out.
