The voltage spikes when you disconnect the jumper source after the engine has started can damage the ECU and relays. It helps to turn on lights and blower and rear defrost before you unhook the extra battery/car. Even that is not foolproof.
I had to replace the ECU in my 90 900 shortly after a jump. BTW the no start was caused by a bad cell in the battery. The battery would take a charge but would internally short out intermittently. When the shorts hit from normal vibration, the engine would cut out as voltage dropped below 10 volts and shut down the ECU. The car would not start. Got the car home with a jump, recharged the battery(or so I thought), but the next day the car died again. ECU failed about a month after a new battery had solved the immediate problem. My guess is that the internal battery shorts may have had more to do with the ECU failing than the jumps, but jumps without a load can do the same thing.
