interesting headgasket issues...(longish)

i confirmed that my 87 SPG's head gasket is blown based on the extreme pressure in the coolant resevior and the bubbles in there as well. i was told that nothing else can cause these symptoms, and that made sense to me. so, fearing the worst, i have been driving with EXTREME caution for the last few days. i even unplugged the APC as to not tempt myself. i figured boost and a weak gasket are a lethal combo. well, tonight i was out on a little drive, and out of curiousity, i plugged the APC back in. not expecting much (i currently have 87 octane in to pinch pennies for a road trip), i hit the gas pedal. oddly enough the thing pulled, really hard. i may have not felt it pull that hard ever. i assume it was able to boost that much because of my new fornt mount intercooler, and the fact that it's cold and rainy right now.
but, anyway, judging by the power of the SPG i thought maybe my headgasket was fine. i pulled over to check things out and noticed more bubbles in the coolant, and coolant leaking out of the gasket itself!! (or so it seemed, it was pretty dark out)
so, my final question is how did my car go so fast with a blown headgasket? is it because the symptoms are just beginning? any help would be great. thanks!
