One of the key reasons why the radiator and heating hoses give out is because of the leaking of combustion chamber gases leeching into the cooling system through a dying head gasket. This can go on for some time before serious gasket issues surface. The end result is gummy internal hoses surfaces that begin to degrade and collect as a fine black paste on the inside walls of the water reservoir. I imagine it also accumulates inside the radiator and perhaps the water pump.
Keep in mind that even with a new head gasket, you may have head damage in the form of corrosion to the point where a new gasket won't help with the leeching of gases. Ask me how I know and why I've begun the prep work toward replacing my 82T 8V head with over 200K miles and corrosion damage with a head from an 86 8V n/a with low miles and no corrosion damage.
