There are a few different ways to do this procedure. I did this one month ago (search archives, it was 2 weeks before Superbowl as a reference point) and i removed the shock from its lower mount.
If you do remove the shock from its lower mount, i recommend replacing the lower shock bushings as well... just one less thing to potentially have to diagnose down the road.
I also recommend a tie-rod end removal tool which will make removing the ball joints MUCH easier (i showed a pic of the one you want in another ball joint post w/n the last week). If you can't find, let me know and i'll find the pic and post it again.
