I agree that banging on the end of the pickle fork was just no fun... but neither was banging on the eyes of the swivel!
I found the tie rod end tool to work best (on the uppers, need a quick hacksaw (which i didn't have) to cut the bolt to create some clearance for the lowers).
It's amazing when you struggled with the hammering technique, and then you try the tie rod end tool... a few turns on the end of the bolt with a socket and "plop" if falls right down (and a grin comes to your face).
