Ari has some really detailed posts in the archives. I had one rolled in about a year ago (@ 135K) and had no chain noise until this winter. Tormented me all winter so recently I pulled the v.cover again to checked cam marks myself and inspect the guides (and replace the pad again!). Checked tensioner as well and it's extended 7.5mm. Not bad, but what was odd was the amount of slack the chain had between cam sprokets. Still loud, but may be #1 intake valve too - I got lots of recent bad sounds where none should eminate....
Anyway, I think if I had to do over, I would wait on the chain until engine is out because the tranny life expectancy is about when the chain typically gets loud. Then I'd only do it with guides and bottom sproket. All new.
