This is just a guess, but perhaps that restriction step inside the t body is for the various vacuum ports, being since they are all located along that ridgeline. Remove that ridgeline of metal and it might effect some of the components that require specific vacuum readings.
I've read on here (perhaps the performance site) that some have tried a DIY large bore by adapting a butterfly valve disc from a big GM car to fit the connecting arm inside the t body, then using a Dremel tool to excise the unwanted metal inside the T body. A delicate chore no doubt considering that if you make a mistake, there's no fixing it... or maybe you enjoy JB Weld fixes.
