My car has been experiencing the loss of 2nd gear for some time. It has not gotten worse over time. Briefly, it shifts from 1st to 3rd when I ease up on the accelerator. The loss of 2nd is much worse when the car is warm, when its cold there actually is a 2nd gear. I've read many posts that this is common on 900 autos. Many call for a band adjustment to fix the problem. However, 2 separate Saab mechanics have said this could speed up total failure of the transmission. Their explanation was that this could put more stress on other gears and one day I might find myself unable to get into drive. Can this be true? For those of you that have experienced similar problems and got band adjustment, how did the adjustment effect the longevity of the transmission? Also, should I continue with this annoying 2nd gear problem, or attempt to fix with adjustment? Any insight and opinions greatly appreciated.
