Sounds like it's running kinda lean per your diagnosis. My first thought is that it might have a vacuum leak of some sort.
If you haven't replaced the vacuum hoses, now is a good time to do it. If the rubber bushings that hold the vacuum nipples into the intake manifold and valve cover are original, you may want to replace them. They tend to shrink and leak vacuum.
If the hose that connects the Fuel Pressure Regulator to the intake manifold is cracked or leaks in other ways, it could lead the FPR to decrease outlet pressure and lean out the mixture under boost conditions.
Another bushing to check is the one that holds the PCV bayonet into the plastic intake duct. They tend to split at the thin area where they go into the duct. And, if the PCV bayonet isn't pressed in all the way to the shoulder of the fitting, it'll leak vacuum. I used some silicone lube on the metal part of the bayonet to make it easy to push in.
Yet another source for a vacuum leak is the ELCD canister.
Clogged fuel filter or weak fuel pump are possibilities, but checking the cheap stuff first usually works out.
