I have an Alpine in dash AM/FM/CD installed in my 92 900 (125K and counting!). A car stereo dealer I consulted said that the 900 was not really built for good sound, as Saabs are today (neither, he said, are some Jaguars.) He said that the cabin is essentially still a hatchback, the front speakers ring treble in your face, and the bass is virtually nonexistent. Now that he said that, it does sound that way. He advised a powered subwoofer, or cutting holes in the rear shelf to install some larger speakers with more bass range, disconnecting the small OEM speakers. Also, needless to say, a front speaker upgrade or augmentation with little tweeters. I opted first to try an upgrade of my two blown OEM rear speakers with better-quality Pioneer speakers the same size. It has helped a little. My question: Would the cognoscenti among you opt for: 1) an across-the band amplifier and a subwoofer? 2) amplification for the subwoofer only? Perhaps getting an OEM radio and CD-equalizer from a dead SPG, and [erforming similar speaker upgrades? Or bag the whole thing because nothing helps much over the engine/road noise but cranking up the gain?
Sometimes I think I should just get a 9-5, but the thought of letting the faithful little 900 go after my son's neglect just will not let me do it. Any buyer here in Cleveland would probably just use it as a beater - it is pristine, but automatic. I can do 0-60 by Wednesday...
Thanks for any insights available!
