I think your audio guy has the right idea but is on the wrong track. Saabs from the factory don't have much in the way of provisions for sound. They were built for driving and not listening. The front 4" speakers are in dumb locations, what with sound being reflected off the oddly shaped windshield, and the rear speakers are 4x10s which aren't really good at anything except not taking up a lot of space. To make it worse, on a hatch, those 4x10s are effectively free-air since there is no seal between the trunk and the cabin. On a notchback model they actually seem to do alright (though they still aren't great).
You can put 6x9s on the rear shelf, but that is not a good solution IMHO. Aside from the fact that doing so makes it more difficult to remove the shelf (even with quick-release terminals) you are hanging enormous speakers on a piece of thin wood which is not firmly attached to the car. Speakers want strong mounts and good seals and the parcel shelf does none of the above.
You really can go nuts in a c900 and get fantastic sound. GM has a very good setup, and somewhere I have a link to another guy who competed in sound off competitions in a c900. I believe JustinHiFi has put quite a bit of work into his system as well. It *can* be done. My recommendation is to start by getting a good quality 4-channel amp, mounting 5.25" speakers in the rear side panels, and see where that leaves you. After that, look into adding a small sealed sub in the trunk (if you wish to spare the space) powered by its own amp. If that still doesn't do it, look to mount component speakers in the front doors. That's my setup, FWIW, total cost has been around $800 including the $350 Sony head unit. My car sounds as good or better than just about anything I've heard, factory or otherwise.
