the gearing in the lever may be the source of your problem. to remove the lever, remove the seat (you'll need a #50 torx socket; several smaller extensions help here cuz they allow a bit of bending. be patient with the wiring plug). get a nut driver/socket & unbolt lever from behind (two bolts only). remove and inspect for gearing movement, lubrication. be sure to note the relative position between the lever and the two small raised positioning 'bumps' so you can re-fit easily. grease up gears before install, if necessary. if a 3-door car, lightly grease the two round knobs around which the seat back hooks to keep it in place; this will allow the seat to be easily returned to its normal position without too much resistance.
be careful that you don't mess up the spring on the spindle that spans the seat. this spring is what allows you to lift yourself while sitting in the seat. when it goes, it's quite startling. getting it twisted back and into place is a pita, requiring the use of your toolbox's largest expletives.
p.s. the lever is not the best-made device in the world. if you try to force it, you'll destroy the plastic bit from which the lever telescopes.
