If this is your '86 SPG that you're talking about, there are a few things it could be ...
Try cleaning out the AIC with carburator cleaner. Sometimes they get sticky and don't like to respond.
Also, clean out the throttle body around the throttle plate with carburator cleaner.
If the vacuum hoses are old (you've probably read this a lot around here because vacuum leaks are the bane of the 900 Turbo), replace them because they tend to get brittle and crack after a decade or so. Same with the rubber bushings that hold vacuum nipples into the intake manifold and valve cover. Valve cover gasket can also be a source of vacuum leaks.
Inspect the lower AIC hose for leaks, too. They can go bad after a decade of being exposed to oil.
If you still have a loping idle, it's possible that you do have a bad AIC.
After I cleaned the throttle body and AIC valve on my '89 SPG, the idle became very steady.
