The inner driver is the cup-shaped termination on the drive shaft coming out of the side of the transmission. It has three recesses on the inside to accept the tripod bearing, which mounts on the end of the axel coming from the wheel. The combination works sort of like a universal joint and allows the wheel to move up/down relative to the transmission. If the surfaces where the tripod bearing engages the inner driver have uneven or excessive wear, you could get some vibration. It is not, however, necessary for the bearing surfaces to be entirely smooth as long as the wear is even. It is normal to have a little wear which produces small depressions on the wear surface.

Note, however, that even severe damage to the tripod bearing does not necessarily lead to vibration. On my son's car, one of the three bearings in the tripod assembly came apart, yet it produced no significant vibration or other indication of a problem.

On most cars, it is the right inner driver/tripod bearing that goes bad because heat from the exhaust can lead to splitting the rubber boot and loss of lubricant.

It is unclear why the mechanic replaced the axel. Normally, it is just the tripod bearing or CV joint or wheel bearings that go bad. The axel itself is pretty well indestructable.

The obvious question is whether the CV joint and wheel bearings have been inspected for wear/play.

How about a warped rotor that's batting the brake pads back/forth?
