A weak 2nd synchro is a fairly common problem. Fixing it requires pulling the transmission, disassembly, new parts, and putting it all back. Figure $1500-2500 depending on the shop and other problems that need to be addressed. If you do the R&R yourself, you may be able to get by for as little as $3-500 for the transmission repair.
If it is just the synchro, you can live with it by learning to double clutch, and/or being very gentle when going into 2nd. Replacing the transmission oil could also help the problem.
A major concern is the pinion bearing. If it goes, it can trash the transmission. The usual sign of a pinion bearing failure is a whine, particularly in 3/4/5 above about 30 mph and when either accelerating or slowing. As damage accumulates, shifting can get hard. Depending on the extent of the damage, the fix is to get a rebuilt tranny exchange or to rebuild the bad bits. $2500 is a typical figure.
To protect yourself, have an independent mechanic who is knowledgable about Saab 900 transmissions take a look at it.
