1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
Hello all....
As my '89 900S continues it's purge of oil, I looked at another SAAB today and wanted to get some pro mech advise on some of the components that differ from mine. This is a '91 SAAB convertable, 49K original, auto tranny, turbo. So i just got back from taking this car for a test spin and, aside from a few minor glitches (tightening of the windshield wiper, burnt fog light, replace hazard light switch) she looks great. Body is solid with no sign of cancer, compression feels good, shifting through all gears smoothly, shiny exhaust, no fluid leaks (unlike my rolling Valdez). The only concern I really have is a slight 'ticking' from one of the pistons. The sound remained localized and was not due to lack of oil. I'm presuming it was a valve problem but am concerned about other grave diagnoses. Although I will most likely take it to a mechanic, your thoughts on The Sound would be appreciated.
Onto my other concerns:
The transmission: I'm not a fan of automatic transmissions for the simple facts that they get lower gas milage, continue to pull you forward as you're braking and prevent the necessary rocking motion needed when getting out of a snowbank. The manual tranny on my '89 has 192K thus far and, as is to be expected, has pretty much lost reverse. Your thoughts on the life of an auto tranny? Common problems? Preventative maintenance?
Convertable top and motor: Hey, it's a convertable! But what to expect from the life of these two? I probably won't be garaging it much and have read int he past that the tops and motors are expensive to replace. Difficulty in replacing them DIY-style? Costs w/ and w/out pro techs? Lifespan?
Turbo: And it goes fast, too! I dun ain't neever drove a turba befer! How long do they tend to last? Again, maintenance?
I'd love to see my 900 go for another 100K and I'll be doing my best to get some of the things fixed once I have another car, but I can't use it as a daily driver AND fix these things simultaneously. It just won't happen. This SAAB looks like a suitable mate for my lonely old bastard and maybe I can put him out to pasture with this cute vixen someday. At any rate, thoughts and opinions are appreciated.
Thanks all,
Phil
